A good idea when gardening in your Calgary landscape design is to keep a record of
progress. If it is a journal form or photographic form of recording the
progress of the garden is helpful for the years to come. Recording which types
of plants work well, which did not work or what types of soil can help future
gardens start without any trial and error of previous years.
If vegetables are your thing pick garden vegetables often
and early. While immature, many types of vegetables are very tasty in their
young phase. Snap peas, little summer squash, cucumbers, and budding broccoli
can be picked to keep the plants in a
state of reproduction for a longer period of time. This will also increase
yields with a second harvest off of the same plants.
If you want to save then don't buy plant pots. Commercial
plant plots from the garden center can be very expensive, anything from $5 to
$100. Any container with a few draining holes pierced into the bottom of it can
serve as a plant pot, so to save a lot of money, start recycling food
containers today.
You may also want to avoid chemicals for
pest control. Chemicals are effective but can also damage your plants. You
should look for natural methods instead. For instance, you can buy jars of
ladybugs and release them on your plants. Ladybugs are natural predators for a
variety of smaller insects that eat flowers and other plants.
Make use of rain buckets and barrels around your home.
You can later use this collected rainwater on your garden to grow healthier
plants, while saving the planet. This method also reduces your water bill, as
you can't be charged for using the water that runs off your roof!
And to make your garden more productive, allocate space
based on what grows best in your area instead of simply choosing your most
favorite crops. Although you may love beets, if tomatoes grow better in your
climate then give them more room in your garden and make your beet plantings
smaller. Ask your neighbors or take a look around your area to see what grows
best in your region.
